Size is a very important factor when you go to buy a laptop. Before you look at specs or pricing, you need to figure out just how portable you need your laptop to be. Laptops are usually categorized by their display sizes.

Consider which size would meet needs the best. Main categories of laptops in terms of size are Netbook, Standard, Hybrid Laptop/Tablet, and Desktop Replacement / Ultrabook. Note that the Mac laptops are entirely different. They may not meet these search criteria here.

Netbook - Netbook is the smallest laptop available and is ideal for frequent travellers.

Standard - This is the standard sized laptop. It's available in wide configuration and is suitable for all purposes.

Hybrid Laptop/Tablet - These are the latest style of laptops to the date. They are with touch screens and many have detachable keyboards.

Desktop Replacement/Ultrabook - ultrabooks are you largest laptops in today's scenario with the most powerful configuration and hence are the most expensive ones.


Depending on your usage of laptop and your necessities, make sure you pick the size that suits you the best. Size can't be upgraded later like RAM and ROM. You’re blocked into the choice whatever you select, so make a wise choice.

Generally, Laptop sizes start at 11.6 inches and go up to 17.3 inches. Most brands and OEMS like HP, Dell, ASUS and Acer tend to offer three display sizes - 13.3-inch, 15.6-inch and 17.3-inches. However, some laptops are available in the sizes of range 11.6 inches, 12.5 inches and 14 inches.

If portability is your selection criteria, then you’ll definitely want to go for a smaller sized Windows laptop. They generally tend to be thinner and lighter than their larger versions or counterparts. Go for laptops with a screen size that is either 12.5 inches or 13.3 inches and weighs between 1kg and 1.5kgs.

When you are looking for the best laptop to buy, the most important factor becomes is that you think about what would be your laptop going to do. One size fits all, is a very rare case. Some users need something lighter and more portable. Other users need discrete graphics for things like video editing or running high-end games. If you need a PC with an optical drive or long battery life, you’ll almost certainly have to look for something larger.
